About Us

Raising a Scholar is a U.S.-based, youth-led nonprofit organization dedicated to providing underserved students with access to quality education through virtual learning, academic support, and mentorship. We aim to bridge the education gap by offering resources and opportunities to students who lack access to traditional schooling or educational services.

At Raising a Scholar, we believe that education is the key to unlocking opportunities and creating a brighter future. By leveraging technology, mentorship, and community partnerships, we strive to empower students to achieve academic success and personal growth, no matter their background.

Since its founding, Raising a Scholar has worked to inspire and uplift students, particularly those in underserved communities, by creating an environment where they can excel academically and build the skills they need to succeed in life. We are committed to changing the narrative for young learners and ensuring that education becomes a tool for empowerment and social change.

Our Story

Opeyemi “Yemi” Mahmood is the CEO and Founder of Raising a Scholar, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing equitable, high-quality primary education to underserved children worldwide. Yemi’s passion for educational equity stems from her own experiences as a first-generation student and immigrant. Having witnessed firsthand the disparities that limit access to quality education, she has made it her life’s mission to address these inequities.

Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, Yemi faced significant challenges within an under-resourced educational system. The lack of resources and opportunities shaped her deep commitment to ensuring that others—regardless of their background—have access to the education they deserve. After moving to the United States, Yemi observed similar patterns of inequality and resource limitations in education. These experiences inspired her to establish Raising a Scholar, an organization focused on providing tutoring, academic resources, and essential support to students in need.

At Raising a Scholar, our mission is to empower underserved youth globally, equipping them with the skills and support necessary to thrive academically and pursue brighter futures. Since its founding, the organization has made significant strides, offering online tutoring and scholarship support to students aged 5 to 18. Through strategic partnerships with organizations such as KIVA, Treefish, and Teens Tutor Teens + Georgia, we have expanded our reach to provide intellectual, material, and financial assistance to children across multiple continents.

To date, Raising a Scholar has impacted hundreds of students, fostered a dedicated community of volunteers, and helped countless young minds pursue further education, laying the foundation for a more equitable and empowered future.
